A Fight for a Better Future in Mindanao

By John Tan, CBN Asia Executive Vice-President and Chief Operating Officer

A month ago, while waiting in the office of Dr. Macapado Muslim, the president of Mindanao State University (MSU), I witnessed a scene that apparently occurs in his office on a regular basis.

Across the room was a good-looking young man in his early 20s. He was nervously shuffling the papers in his hand. He was surrounded by some of his teachers who came to speak on his behalf.

The teachers explained to Dr. Muslim that this boy owes the university 890 pesos or 22 dollars. He is also in his fifth and final year. However, he has been prohibited to continue his studies because the deadline to pay his overdue tuition had lapsed.

After a few minutes, the boy gathered enough courage to speak and explain that his family is involved in a rido (a violent clan conflict, usually ending in deaths). The president of the university nodded his head in familiarity and understanding.

After a few more minutes of explaining and pleading for an opportunity to continue his studies, Dr. Muslim instructed his staff to allow the boy to attend his classes. The young man profusely thanked the university president.

After shaking hands, the young man got up and turned his head away. He suddenly started crying uncontrollably as he walked out of the room.

For just 890 pesos, this young man’s future was hanging dangerously in the balance. After three days in MSU, I have come to realize that his story is not an exception.

After my wonderful meeting with Dr. Muslim, I proceeded to meet 10 of Operation Blessing’s little scholars. They are Maranao grade school children who receive free education, school uniforms, school supplies, textbooks and raincoats. These children, who would otherwise have no opportunity to go to school due to abject poverty, now have a fighting chance. Operation Blessing Foundation Philippines is doing what it can to change the future of the island of Mindanao.
